"Uglies: The Puppets of Zlatko Bourek. “Grdači”, or “uglies”, is a term coined with a good deal of humor by the Croatian erudite artist Zlatko Bourek to describe his unusual puppets. One of the most prominent Croatian visual artists and puppet makers, Bourek left an indelible mark on Slovenian puppetry. It was an exhibit in a gallery across the street from us. It was unusual exhibit. One of the comments said that he made them ugly because he wanted them to look like the people in his neighborhood. He did this because he thought the people would associate with them and come to his plays.
